Spotlight Student – Lily Shadeck

We are proud to recognize Cullman High School student Lily Shadeck for her leadership, creativity, and advocacy for students with dyslexia!

At the end of the 2025–2026 school year, the Cullman City Schools Foundation supported Lily by purchasing 75 copies of her recently published children's book, The Dynamic Duo and the Mix-Up Magic. These books were distributed to Cullman Primary School and East and West Elementary School classrooms.

Lily wrote her book to promote a positive understanding of dyslexia. She is also an active member of MythBusters and has previously donated books printed in dyslexia-friendly fonts to our school libraries. In addition, Lily has established a scholarship program to help local families in need access dyslexia testing.

Lily exemplifies what it means to be a student leader, advocate, and difference-maker. Her dedication to raising awareness, supporting families, and helping others is making a meaningful impact in our community.

CCS Commitments

With the recent passing of the CHOOSE Act, it is important to remember why the Cullman City School System remains the best choice for the best education! Here are five quick reminders…
Cullman City School District document outlining commitments to students and staff.

Literacy Act

In May of 2019, the Alabama Literacy Act was enacted. The Alabama Literacy Act was established to improve the reading proficiency of public school kindergarten through 3rd grade students and ensure that those students are able to read at or above grade level by the end of the 3rd grade. One requirement is for 3rd grade students who are not reading at grade-level, as indicated on the ACAP, to be retained in third grade.
Throughout the school year, teachers will provide parents feedback on how their children are progressing in reading using benchmark tools like DIBELS and iReady. Third grade students who do not meet the score on ACAP will be required to attend a mandatory summer reading camp in June. At the conclusion of the reading camp the identified students will have one more opportunity to take the ACAP and show that they are reading at a third grade level or above.
The third grade teachers at both East and West are very strong and receive tremendous support, however it is going to take a team (teacher, parent and student) to reach the 100% threshold.

Cybersecurity Awareness Month: Keeping Our Families Safe Online

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and this year's national theme is "Don't Make It Easy for Them." Led by the National Cybersecurity Alliance and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), the campaign reminds us that most online criminals look for the easiest target: a reused password, an account without a second login step, a device that hasn't been updated, or a link clicked in a hurry.
Our students spend more of their day online than ever before, at school and at home. Keeping them safe is a partnership. We protect student data and devices on our networks, and you are the most important influence on the habits your children carry with them everywhere else.
The good news: a few simple habits stop most attacks. To help you put these habits into practice, we've attached simple conversation starters and extra resources below.
How Our District Protects Students
Schools are a frequent target for cybercriminals because we hold valuable student and family information. Our Technology Department works every day to keep that information safe.
  • Content filtering on all district networks and student devices, as required by the Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA).
  • Multifactor authentication for staff accounts that access student records.
  • Regular software updates and security monitoring on district devices.
  • Staff training on spotting phishing emails and protecting student data.
  • Digital citizenship lessons from our Technology Integration Team that teach students to be safe, kind, and responsible online.
One important reminder: the district will never ask you for a password or Social Security number by email or text. If a message claiming to be from the school seems urgent or unusual, call your child's school directly using a number you already know.

Four Habits Every Family Can Practice

These are the four core behaviors of this year's national campaign. Practice them together as a family.
A Cybersecurity Awareness Month infographic titled "Don't Make It Easy for Them" detailing four habits to prevent online attacks.
Bonus for families: Keep devices out of bedrooms overnight, review privacy settings on apps and games together, and make sure your child knows they can come to you without fear of losing their device if something goes wrong online.

Talking with Your Child, Age by Age

The most powerful safety tool is an ongoing conversation. Here are starting points for each stage.
